Traveling to Eindhoven

Eindhoven is the fifth city of the Netherlands, located in the south of the country. There are a number of options to reach Eindhoven. Below are our suggestions:
  1. If you are near Paris, London, Hamburg, Barcelona, Istanbul, direct flights to Eindhoven Airport are available. Otherwise, flying to Eindhoven via Amsterdam Schiphol is probably too expensive and time consuming due to transfer time and having to travel from Eindhoven Airport to the city center (where hotels and the university are located). See below for information on how to get to Eindhoven city center (including hotels and the university) from Eindhoven Airport.
  2. Fly to Amsterdam Schiphol or to Düsseldorf International in Germany. Düsseldorf is probably both less crowded and cheaper to fly to than Amsterdam Schiphol. See below for more information on how to get to Eindhoven from either of these airports.
  3. Travel by train. The Dutch railways have an international as well as a domestic train planner. Note that Eindhoven is not a stop for any international trains, but you should be able to reach it with 1-2 transfers from Paris, Brussels, Frankfurt and Düsseldorf.
  4. Travel by car. Eindhoven is located near major highways, including the Amsterdam - Liege and Antwerp - Ruhrgebiet routes. Any European route planner should be able to give you directions to Eindhoven. A map of highways near Eindhoven is available here. Once you reach Eindhoven by any of the main routes (A2, A50, A58, A67, A270), follow the signs 'Centrum' until 'Universiteit' is indicated.

Getting from Amsterdam Schiphol Airport to Eindhoven

Getting to Eindhoven train/bus station takes about an hour and a half. The arrivals hall at Schiphol and the NS train station main hall form one large hall. You need to buy an NS train ticket to Eindhoven (see below for info on buying NS tickets).
You should take a train to Duivendrecht, to which trains depart from platform 1 or 2, six times an hour. At Duivendrecht, you arrive on the lower level. Go to platform 8 on the upper level, from which direct trains to Eindhoven (final destination will be Maastricht or Heerlen) leave every 30 minutes.

Getting from Düsseldorf International Airport to Eindhoven

Getting to Eindhoven train/bus station takes about two and a half hours. At the airport, follow the signs to "Düsseldorf Flughafen Terminal / Terminal Rail Station" (marked with a big S sign). The cheapest way to get to the Netherlands is by using VRR (Verbund Rhein Ruhr) tickets, not the DB (Deutsche Bahn) tickets. Such VRR tickets are valid on the route to the Dutch town of Venlo. You need an "EinzelTicket PreisStufe C" (EUR 7,50) for the German part of the journey, plus a "ZusatzTicket" (EUR 1,75) for the part from Germany to Venlo. Even though these are not DB tickets, you can buy them at the DB ticket office, but they are also available from ticketing machines.
Take S-Bahn S7 in the direction of Solingen. Get off at Düsseldorf Hbf (Hauptbahnhof, main train station). Trains to Venlo depart from platform 4 at :48 every hour. After about 70 minutes, you arrive in Venlo on platform 3; walk down the stairs into the station hall.
In Venlo, you need to buy an NS train ticket to Eindhoven (see below for info on buying NS tickets). Trains to Eindhoven depart from platform 1 at :04 and :19 every hour.

Getting from Eindhoven Airport to Eindhoven

Getting to Eindhoven train/bus station takes about half an hour. Simply take bus 401 which has the station as its final destination. Alternatively, you can take a taxi.

Buying NS train tickets

At both Schiphol train station and Venlo train station, you can either buy your ticket at the ticket/service office, or from a ticket machine in the station hall. You need a single (Enkele Reis) 2nd or 1st class ticket to Eindhoven. At the ticket/service offices and at the old-style ticket machines, you can pay cash, while the newer touchscreen machines do not take cash but do take credit cards (MasterCard/Maestro) and allow you to switch the display language to English. Touch the UK flag in the lower left corner and simply follow the instructions on screen (click here for more information on buying tickets, including a simulation of the touchscreen machines). The ticket prices for tickets to Eindhoven are displayed below.

From Schiphol From Venlo
2nd class EUR 16,70 EUR 07,50
1st class EUR 26,70 EUR 12,00

Getting around in Eindhoven

Technische Universiteit

From the train platforms, go down the stairs and turn right. Walk straight out of the station hall (indicated by the NS (dutch railways) logo), leaving the bus station (indicated by the bus icon) to your left, and heading in the 2 o'clock direction. Looking ahead, you will see the oval shaped Kennispoort building (KP on the map). Walk towards this building, crossing the main road, and follow the winding foot/bicycle path, crossing the Dommel river. After walking in this direction a bit further, you will see the main building (HG on the map) with the large TU/e sign on top to your right, as well as an information panel with a campus map straight ahead.

The Computer Science Division is located on floors 5 through 8 of the main building (HG).
The Eindhoven FASTAR Days presentations will take place in room HG 5.95 of this building.

The conference dinner will take place at the University Club, located on the first floor of the main building (HG).
